Prayer Plants

An Easy Care Guide

Plus, prayer plant propagation tips you need for success!

Let's Get Started!

Called "prayer plant" because of its nyctinastic movement—the up-and-down movement of the leaves in response to light.

This folding of the leaves resembles hands in prayer!

Bright, indirect light is ideal for the prayer plant, but it can also tolerate lower light levels.

LIGHT

Prayer plants don't like to completely dry out!

WATER

Water when the top inch or so of the soil dries out.

You don't want the soil to be WET, just MOIST.

WATERING TIP

So use your finger to feel the soil first before watering!

Using a humidifier is the easiest way to provide this for your plant.

HUMIDITY

Prayer plants love humidity!

Use a well-draining potting mix to avoid root rot.

POTTING MIX

A few handfuls of perlite can help increase drainage!

Repot your prayer plant when it becomes rootbound.

Repotting

Use a pot the next size up with good drainage!

Now, learn how to Propagate Prayer Plants

A Step-By-Step Guide

READ ON!

Use a pair of clean, sharp scissors to cut off a section of your prayer plant that has a few healthy leaves.

1

Important!

You must cut BELOW a node.

New growth comes from nodes, which is why it needs to be included on the cutting.

Put the cutting in a jar of water.

The node should be under the water.

2

Any leaves should be above the water.

You can put the cutting directly into potting mix instead of water.

Make sure the node is buried, and keep the mix moist!

PROPAGATION TIP

Keep the cutting in bright, indirect light. Refill the water as needed and replace it when it's grimy.

3

When the roots grow to two to three inches long, you can plant the cutting into a pot with potting mix.

4

Water your new plant and put it back into bright, indirect light.

5

And that's how to propagate prayer plants!
